Arjun Erigaisi and Vaishali win Tata Steel Blitz
Arjun Erigaisi defeated Hikaru Nakamura in the penultimate round to clinch victory in the Tata Steel India Chess Blitz with a round to spare, meaning that for two years in a row he’s never finished below 2nd place in either the Blitz or Rapid in Kolkata. There was more Indian success in the Women’s event, as Vaishali finished 1.5 points clear of Mariya Muzychuk.

Tata Steel India Blitz Day 1: Arjun and Mariya lead
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov started the Tata Steel Chess India Blitz with a stunning 6/7, but defeats in the last two rounds allowed Arjun Erigaisi to overtake him before the final day. At least five players are in contention in the Open section, while in the Women’s Mariya Muzychuk scored a brilliant 8/9, leaving only Vaishali within touching distance.

Nihal Sarin dominates Tata Steel Chess India Rapid
18-year-old Indian prodigy Nihal Sarin has won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid with a round to spare. Arjun Erigaisi beat Nihal in the final round to finish just half a point behind, but no-one else came close. The first ever Women’s Tata Steel Chess India Rapid was won by Ukraine’s Anna Ushenina, who overcame Nana Dzagnidze in a blitz playoff.

Magnus Carlsen wins the MrDodgy Invitational
Magnus Carlsen has won the 3rd edition of the MrDodgy Invitational after cruising to a 6.5:1.5 victory in the final against Daniil Dubov. The games were closer than the scoreline suggests, but Daniil explained that when playing Magnus it’s a case of “you can choose the way you lose”. He chose to try and match the World Champion on the board, but not on the clock.

Carlsen's 7:1 birthday win sets up Dubov final
Magnus Carlsen celebrated his 32nd birthday with a crushing 7:1 victory over Sam Sevian in the MrDodgy Invitational semi-finals. At first that looked set to earn a final against Alexander Grischuk, who stormed to a 3:0 lead, but Daniil Dubov hit back to win five games and clinch a 7:5 victory. The Carlsen-Dubov final starts at 17:00 CET on Thursday December 1st.

Magnus Carlsen will today celebrate his 32nd birthday by playing a MrDodgy Invitational semi-final against Sam Sevian at 17:00 CET. Magnus survived an impressive fightback by Kirill Shevchenko, while Sam overcame Jorden van Foreest. In the other match-up it’s Alexander Grischuk vs. Daniil Dubov.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won a brilliant game against Wesley So as he scored 3/3 on Day 1 of the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid and Blitz in Kolkata. It was all the more impressive after Wesley had scored a fine win over Hikaru Nakamura in the previous round. No-one else has won more than a single game, which was a pattern followed in the Women’s section, where only Nana Dzagnidze made it 3/3.

For the first time there’s also a parallel Women’s tournament featuring Humpy Koneru, the Muzychuk sisters and more top players.

“I don’t feel bad about beating him at all!” said Magnus Carlsen after defeating Salem Saleh 7:0 in the Last 16 of the MrDodgy Invitational, revealing he’d recently lost some online games to the UAE grandmaster. There were also wins for Daniil Dubov and Rauf Mamedov as the knockout stage began.

Plichta beats Magnus as Mr Dodgy Invitational begins
Magnus Carlsen only appeared in the line-up for the 1st 16-player qualifier of the prestigious Mr Dodgy Invitational 3 when David Howell dropped out with an hour to spare. Magnus went on to dominate, though he did lose to Kamil Plichta, Gawain Jones and Alan Pichot. Magnus now plays Salem Saleh in the knockout stages.

China clinch 3rd World Team Championship title
China defeated Uzbekistan in both mini-matches to add to the gold medals they won in the 2015 and 2017 FIDE World Team Championships. They finished unbeaten, which was a remarkable performance for the 3rd or 4th best team China could have fielded. Spain took their first ever World Team medals as they inflicted more heartbreak on India to snatch bronze.

16-year-old Javokhir Sindarov scored a crucial win as Olympiad Champions Uzbekistan defeated India in the FIDE World Team Championship semi-finals. They now take on China, who escaped with a draw in the first match against Spain before overpowering them in the second, including a wonderful victory by Bai Jinshi over Alexei Shirov.

MCCT Finals 4: Carlsen beats Giri 3:0 to take sole lead
Magnus Carlsen leads the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals by 3 points after he beat Anish Giri 3:0 in Round 4 while Jan-Krzysztof Duda fell to Liem Le. Anish commented, “today was the day when I found out what’s broken,” as he saw lessons in a defeat full of hard-to-explain decisions.
